Abstract: This present master thesis titled „Christian individual psychology: possibility or fiction? “researches the question, to what extent individual psychology today, according to Alfred Adler in doctrine and practice –from a Christian perspective –for Christians in a counselling capacity, is acceptable and thus applicable. The research question will be answered based on a differentiated analysis following these four key questions:1)Which idea of man is behind the counselling concept of Individual Psychology (IP) which idea of man is behind a Christian counselling concept?2) What is the goal of both counselling concepts (IP and Christian counselling) regarding the dynamics in counselling, which is rooted in the idea of man?3)Where intersect and where do the differences lie of both ideas of man and the dynamics in counselling?4)How does the specific application of IP-Tools look like in practice as a Christian? The methodical approach is primarily analytical and descriptive, then comparing and dialogic. Used tools are the Venn Diagram and a list of criteria’s. The Venn Diagram was expanded with the area “border area “, which lies on the intersecting line between intersection and difference. The study concludes that Alders applied individual psychology and the analysed Christian counselling concept of Willelm Ouweneel have consensus views regarding the idea of man and the dynamics in counselling. These have to be, from a Christian perspective, supplemented within the border-and differential areas (of the Venn Diagram), so that the present IP in doctrine and practice –from a Christian perspective –is acceptable and thus applicable. This present thesis can serve as a guideline for theologians as well as counselors within the scope of their counselling activity. Due to the disclosure of areas of tension between Practical Theologies and present IP practice, it will contribute to an open theological discussion between Christian counselors about the application of IP.
